Benjamin Henry Sheares (1907–1981) played a significant role in Singapore’s history, both as a pioneering medical professional and as the nation's second President from 1971 to 1981. Widely honoured as the Father of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Singapore, he rose from modest beginnings in a Eurasian family, overcoming financial challenges with determination and a deep commitment to medicine.

His academic excellence earned him a scholarship to the King Edward VII College of Medicine, Driven by discipline and a pursuit of excellence, he quickly became a leading obstetrician and gynaecologist. He served at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and later at the Kandang Kerbau Hospital (KKH).

Dr Sheares married Ms Yeo Seh Geok in 1939. Ms Yeo was a pupil midwife at KKH who had recently arrived from a small town Quanzhou near Xiamen (Amoy) in the Fujian province, China. She had been sent by her father to Singapore to escape the Japanese invasion of China. The couple had three children together.

In 1942, during World War II, he spearheaded significant improvements in maternal and neonatal care, substantially lowering mortality and morbidity rates. In 1951, Dr Sheares became the first Singaporean appointed as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the university. He gained wide recognition for his clinical expertise, dedication to patient care, commitment to teaching, and contributions to medical research, including pioneering life-changing medical procedures.

Although he retired from public service in 1961 due to health concerns, he remained active in private practice and served as an Honorary Consultant at KKH, continuing to help those in need. On 2 January 1971, he was sworn in as President of the Republic of Singapore. During his decade-long tenure, Dr Sheares carried out his responsibilities with integrity, dedication, and quiet dignity.

Dr Sheares embodied the values of service, humility, and excellence. His legacy lives on not only in the medical field and national leadership but also in landmarks such as the Benjamin Sheares Bridge and Sheares Hall at the National University of Singapore.

We take pride in the fact that our hall of residence bears the name of such an inspiring figure—an exceptional doctor and public servant who rose to prominence through perseverance, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
